    Questions about Naturalization Records

See below for frequently asked questions about these records

Naturalization Records from Queens County start in 1795 and end in 1952. In Bronx County, they begin in 1914 and end in 1952.

Bronx County was the final borough formed in New York City, and the last of the 62 counties created by New York State. Bronx County Courts opened for the first time on January 2, 1914.

The National Archives and Records Administration states that " All INS records are now overseen by the US Citizenship and Immigration  Services (USCIS). USCIS maintains duplicate copies of court records  (including the certificate of citizenship) created September 27,  1906-March 31, 1956 within Certificate Files (C-Files). Beginning April  1, 1956, INS began filing all naturalization records in a subject’s  Alien File (A-File). Additional information can be found on the National Archives website.

Naturalization Records can be searched in many ways. In addition to searching by first and/or last name, you can narrow your search by including the Country of Origin, the Year of Arrival to the United States, the County of Residence upon completing the naturalization process and  the Petition or Declaration Number of the naturalization record. The more information entered, the more accurate your search results will be.

Your local library may have reading material that can help you with your ancestry search. There are also online resources that can help you locate Naturalization Records. The Italian Genealogical Group has a searchable database that covers much of New York and New Jersey, as well as Puerto Rico. The German Genealogy Group  maintains a similar searchable database.

Certified Copies of Naturalization Records found in our database can be requested through the County Clerk's Office. Click here to visit the Queens County Clerk's website. Click here to visit the Bronx County Clerk's website.
